Gardener’s Notes: Beans need warm weather and fertile, well-drained soil. Plant in late spring after night temperatures reach 55°F (13°C). Form a tripod with three 6-8 feet poles and sow 4-6 seeds around each pole. Thin to 3 or 4 seedlings per pole. To plant in rows, space 5-6 inches apart and use tall supports. Harvest green pods when young and tender, before seeds swell. Harvest beans immature as shell beans or let pods fully mature on the plant for dry beans. Hardy to USDA Zone 7, annual elsewhere.
