For over 140 years, this small family business near Chesapeake Bay, MD has been making quality traditional split-oak baskets by hand for hard-working gardeners and market farmers. Part of our national craft heritage, their basket making process is documented in the Smithsonian Institute.

Your cut flowers are still alive and breathing and need the right care for longest vase life. In the trial garden, we keep our bottle of FloraLife Liquid Flower Food next to the sink and add it to vase water every time we bring flowers indoors, so we recommend it heartily!

Originally formulated for the florist industry, FloraLife Flower Food core ingredients contain an optimum blend of sugar, light acids and balancers. When added to vase water, it provides nutrition to your flowers, keeps vase water clean by inhibiting bacteria, and sustains hydration to really keep flowers looking fresh longer.

Add 2 teaspoons per 1 quart (4 cups) of water. Each 8 oz. bottle makes 100 cups or 25 quarts of vase solution.

Safely and effectively scare off marauding birds who seem to know exactly when seedlings are at their most tender or fruit crops are fully ripe on the tree. This shiny metalized 7/16” wide tape is silver on one side and red on the other.

Attached to stakes over seedling beds, or hung from fruit tree limbs, air movement causes the alternating sides to flutter and flash as they reflect light, signaling danger to birds. Flash tape works even against the most persistent birds. 290 ft. roll 

Nutrient-rich and high in nitrogen and phosphorous, we rely on Down to Earth Bio Fish Organic Fertilizer for success with all Brassica family members including broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, kale and pak choi, etc., because it helps them head up nicely without prematurely bolting (sending up a seed stalk). Because Brassicas also are notoriously prone to aphids, Bio Fish increases pest resistance by keeping plants well-nourished and strong from the start.

We also use Bio Fish fertilizer to boost heavy feeders like rapidly developing corn, tomatoes and cucumbers both early and midseason, and it is a fine supplement for beautiful heads of lettuce with sweet tasting leaves and juicy, strong growing leafy greens of all kinds. Our go-to choice of fertilizer for plants that flower or fruit! We amend all of our flower beds with this gentle formula, broadcasting about 5 lbs. per 100 square feet, digging it well into the soil. We sow directly into the amended beds and it never burns the plants.

For fruiting varieties like cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants, work several tablespoons into each planting hole when transplanting, then side dress throughout the season as needed.

For container flowers and vegetables, amend the potting soil with several tablespoons before planting. It makes a noticeable difference, resulting in lush, vigorous growth and great flower and fruit set. Because container plants need to be constantly watered, nutrients flush out fast. About a month after planting, side-dress with All Purpose to keep them productive throughout a long season.

This is also our favorite fertilizer around the landscape. In early spring, when perennials are still dormant and spring rains expected, broadcast sparingly, then cover with a layer of mulch. The fertilizer breaks down slowly and, as plants wake up, they sprout back with vigor. Especially good for dahlias, roses, and bulbs – we also use it on grapes, kiwis and other fruit trees.

We absolutely rely on Sluggo Plus as we always get these pests in spring and it absolutely works quickly and efficiently.   

Sluggo Plus comes as granules that you simply spread/sprinkle among seedlings/young plants, so there’s no need to spray or mix anything. Its active ingredients are a combination of iron phosphate and Spinosad, a natural substance made by a soil bacterium that is toxic to insects. 

Sluggo Plus bait lures slugs, snails and its target insects from their hiding places and attacks their nervous and digestive systems when they ingest the granules. It works so well that we cannot remember how we managed without it!

Unfortunately for home gardeners, birds of many kinds love young seedlings and baby plants. Sometimes they eat them, but they also frequently just pull them out! It’s frustrating, especially after all the work we’ve put into raising tender young plants. The best way to keep birds out is by exclusion. We use and recommend reusable Bird X protective netting.

Made in the USA, this high-quality, heavy duty 5/8-inch polypropylene mesh holds up because it has UV inhibitors, does not tear easily and holds up over time. It’s an excellent product that ensures protection for both tiny seedlings and young plants of vegetables, flowers and herbs in your garden beds.

Simply stretch the bird netting tautly over supports to hold it above the seedlings. We recommend using pliable irrigation tubing (aka poly tubing) bent into hoops over the bed so it holds the netting securely 12-15 inches above the plants. Even if birds land on it, they won’t be able to push it down and peck at your plants.

Growing vining/climbing vegetables and flowers requires a good plant support system. We use and recommend this sturdy, lightweight and reusable polypropylene trellis. It supports climbing flowers and vining vegetables both horizontally and vertically. Made in Italy, this durable, strong UV resistant netting allows air to circulate freely and its big squares are easy to reach through and harvest on both sides.
